Vespa ET4: refined economy

Launched in Rome in September 1996 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the world's most famous scooter, the Vespa ET has a new streamlined, aerodynamic design which however also resembles earlier versions of the Vespa. The 125cc ET4 and 50cc ET2 look exactly alike at first glance: the differences are substantially in the engine and the lamps. On Vespa ET4, two car-type 55W iodine lamps are combined with a twin prismatic projection parabola made of a special transparent polymer, making for high power, less weight and size and a unique design.

As regards the engine, the four-stroke propulsion introduced on the Sfera 125 cc, which has proved itself extremely adapted to the scooter for its noiselessness, economy of use and reliability, also equips the Vespa ET4. Performance has been further increased and fuel consumption and emissions further curtailed. The extremely compact single-cylinder two-valve engine is placed horizontally, and its overhead camshaft is driven by a silent chain with forced air cooling.

Every possible means has been adopted to reduce engine size, inserting a compact lubrication radiator in the cooling circuit and combining the oil cup with the crankcase. Also present, besides, are the electronic ignition with variable timing, the acceleration pump integrated in the carburettor, and the electric start. For the rest, the ET4 retains that absolutely unique Vespa characteristic - a monocoque steel chassis - while arraying itself in elegant colours (including the olive green of the first Vespa). Its retro design details appeal to the Vespa fan's nostalgia, while sophisticated suspensions and automatic change make driving easier than ever before. The ignition keys with their "PiaggioCode" secure the Vespa ET4 from thieves, protecting it with a sophisticated electronic system which works thus: if the key identification is missing, the immobiliser interrupts the central electronic ignition device. The "PiaggioCode" is backed up by traditional mechanical appliances such as the practical ring for hooking a chain through, the anti-theft padlock and the omnipresent steering lock.
