VESPA PX

Vespa PX: Enduring style

Everyone recognises the Vespa style, and its unmistakable elegance, at a glance. The Vespa PX, B>first introduced in 1978, marked a new step forward in styling (the body work was completely redesigned) and performance, while maintaining the mechanical perfection and ultra-modern technical features that are the secret of the Vespa's success: monocoque chassis/body, direct transmission and interchangeable wheels. The Vespa body is a steel shell, and on this structure all the other components form a compact unit. With direct transmission all the power of the engine is transmitted immediately to the driving wheel through constant mesh gear. No chains, no joints and no superfluous parts make a for a compact body with freedom from vibrations and power loss. The interchangeable wheels are cantilever-mounted as in an automobile, both front and rear; only the tyre pressures are different. The Vespa PX series - available in 80cc, 125cc, 150cc and 200cc versions - features various innovations designed to improve comfort, operation and technical performance. The front mudguard is bordered by an easily replaceable trim to protect the vehicle from minor dents and scratches. The oddments compartment behind the front mudguard has ample room for personal items without encroaching on the driver's leg space.

The rear light unit, now more powerful, identifies the vehicle from a distance. This, and the direction indicators, are extra safety features. The saddle, with thicker padding and a more comfortable shape, is fastened by a clamp that locks quickly and securely, and is lifted for access to the fuel tank cap and to the levers operating the side cowling anti-theft system. The latter device offers good protection for the spare wheel too, housed under the left cowling. The front brake is equipped with a self-centring device for the brake shoes, which assures even braking at all times. The brake cable terminates in a manually adjusted brake adjuster which regulates clearance between shoes and drum. The entire range of PX models can be equipped, upon request, with electric starting with a push-button control on the left handlebar sleeve. In vehicles thus equipped, the battery is housed together with the spare wheel under the left cowling. Standard equipment on the new PX models includes the electronic ignition device for easier starting, permanent ignition timing and lower wear on the spark plug electrodes. The new handlebar cover incorporates an instrument panel with speedometer, mileage indicator, fuel level indicator, low fuel warning light and warning lights for headlight, main beam and direction indicators. However, the PX isn't just about being practical. The classic lines of the Vespa ensure that this scooter is stylish as well as practical. All over the world the Vespa is the scooter to be seen on. It is the classic Italian scooter, imitated by many but bettered by none.
