The purpose of the Ionizer air purifier is to trap airborne particles that contaminate our indoor air. Many air purifiers are available with built-in, independent ionizers that clean the air. However, if the HEPA filter needs to be changed some owners may conclude that the purifier is just a lot of trouble... maybe even more trouble than they are worth.

When the ionizer air purifier is turned on, highly charged electrical volts create electrons which are in turn distributed throughout the air. When the charged electrons attach themselves to the air molecules, negative ions are formed and dispersed in the room, attaching themselves to dust, pollen, cigarette smoke and other indoor pollutants, eventually forming larger particles that are trapped by the filters inside the air purifier. Some of these particles also fall to the floor, onto draperies and furniture and are swept, dusted or vacuumed when you clean your house.

As the HEPA filter begins to age and show signs of wear some of the harmful particles do not get filtered and returned to the atmosphere. It is primarily because of this that manufacturers and experts warn consumers not to use the ionizer until the filter has been changed. If allergens like animal dander, pollen or smoke are present, the normal life cycle of an air filter is greatly reduced. Owners are advised to familiarize themselves with the owner’s manual before operating a new air purifier in order to learn and understand how frequently the air filter must be changed.

Negative ions are present whenever the air in a room is stirred, such as waterfalls, rivers and mountains. Positive ions are present in places where the air is mostly stagnant, such as carpets and draperies, producing a prime breeding ground for allergens.

Many people are convinced that negative ions help to promote physical wellness. They believe that the positive benefits increase in as the percentage of negative ions in the air goes up. This theory, however, has yet to be proved scientifically.

In short, ionizers make it possible for air purifiers to perform efficiently. Ionizers help people and pets breathe easier, providing the HEPA filters inside are changed per manufacturers’ suggestions and as long as dust particles that accumulate on carpets, drapes and furniture.
